The size of Lochnagar Crater in the Somme region makes the Battle of the Crater look as though it were fought in a pothole. Such was the destructive power of industrial warfare employed against the German army on the 1st of July, 1916. Not even an mine of this size could cripple German defenses, however, and the British division attacking this sector still took major casualties. The spot today is a popular one among visitors.
