I was rather cynical about signs such as these when we first arrived in Bayeux. I thought that they were simply pandering to tourists, to make them feel comfortable spending more money on their vacation. But throughout our stay in Normandy, we were repeatedly greeted by very welcoming local figures who really seemed to view Americans as the descendants of those who liberated France. I have to admit, I think their gratitude is sincere–or at least that it’s become so embedded in their local culture because of the tourist trade that it has become genuine. Photo credit to author.
